Can I Sell a Car With Money Owing in NZ?

Updated 20 Oct 2026

Yes, you can sell a car with money owing on it in New Zealand, but the loan has to be paid off as part of the sale. Lenders usually register a security interest on the PPSR, and it must be cleared so the buyer gets the car free of the debt.

Why the loan matters

When you borrow against a car, the lender usually registers a security interest on the PPSR. Until it's paid off, the lender has a claim on the car. That's why buyers check the PPSR before they buy.

How to do it

  • Ask your lender for a payout figure. This is the exact amount to clear the loan on a given date.
  • Selling privately: be upfront with the buyer and agree how the loan will be paid off, for example by paying the lender directly from the sale money. Many buyers will walk away otherwise.
  • Selling to a dealer: ask whether they can pay the lender directly as part of the sale. Policies differ, so check first.
  • Make sure the security interest is removed from the PPSR once the loan is cleared.

If the car is worth less than you owe

You'll need to pay the difference to clear the loan. Talk to your lender early about your options.

Common questions

Can a buyer lose the car if I don't pay off my loan?

In a private sale, yes, the lender may be able to repossess it from them. That's why it must be cleared, and why buyers run a PPSR check.
