Best Family SUVs Under $15k in NZ

Under $15,000, reliable family SUVs in NZ include the Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, Nissan X-Trail and Honda CR-V. If you need seven seats, look at an older Toyota Highlander. Pick the best-kept example you can find rather than the newest.
Five-seaters
- Toyota RAV4: dependable and easy to service anywhere.
- Mazda CX-5: nicer to drive than most, with a good interior.
- Nissan X-Trail: a practical, roomy boot. Some later models have a third row.
- Honda CR-V: spacious, comfortable and well built.
Seven-seaters
An older Toyota Highlander gives you seven seats, a strong V6 and the ability to tow. It does use more fuel than a smaller SUV. If you don't need to go off the beaten track, a people mover like a Honda Jade or Toyota Wish is another option and is usually cheaper to run.
What to check on a family SUV
- Service history, especially for automatic gearboxes and 4WD systems.
- Wear on the seats, boot and rear bumper from years of family life.
- Tyres. Bigger SUV tyres cost more to replace.
- Towbar condition if you plan to tow.
