How to Find a Specific Used Car in NZ
Updated 21 Oct 2026
1. Pin down what you really need
- Must-haves: the things you won't compromise on, like seven seats, a towbar or 4WD.
- Nice-to-haves: colour, trim level, sunroof. Being flexible here makes cars much easier to find.
- Your limits: a year range, maximum kilometres and a top budget.
2. Search the obvious places, and set alerts
Check the main listing sites and dealer websites, and save searches so you're told about new listings. Popular models in good condition can sell within days, so be ready to act.
3. Look beyond what's advertised
Many good cars are sold before they're ever listed: trade-ins, cars just arriving at a dealer, or vehicles coming off business fleets. A dealer with a network of partners hears about these first.
Our Car Finder does exactly this. Tell us what you want and we search our network of more than 10 dealerships and partners across New Zealand, including cars that aren't advertised yet.
Buying several cars for a business?
Sourcing a few utes or vans one listing at a time is slow. Give one supplier the full brief (how many vehicles, what they're for, budget and timing) and let them find a matched set. You can do this through our Car Finder by ticking the business option.
Before you buy
However you find it, still do the checks: a PPSR check for money owing, the CIN card if it's from a dealer, and our used car checklist.
Common questions
Can a dealer find a car that isn't listed for sale?
Often, yes. Dealers with a partner network regularly hear about cars before they're advertised. Try our Car Finder.
How long does it take to find a specific car?
Common models in a flexible spec can turn up within days. Rare models or a very tight spec can take weeks. Being flexible on colour and trim speeds it up.
Can you source cars for a business fleet?
Yes. Use the Car Finder, tick the business option and tell us how many vehicles you need.
