How to Transfer Car Ownership in NZ

Updated 20 Oct 2026

When a car is sold in NZ, both the seller and the buyer must tell NZTA straight away. It's free to do online, or you can go to an NZTA agent. When you buy from a dealer, the dealer handles the seller's side for you.

If you're the seller

  • Tell NZTA you've sold the car straight away, ideally online at the time of sale.
  • Until you do, the new owner's tolls, fines and fees can end up with you.
  • Keep a note of the date and time you handed over the car.

If you're the buyer

  • Tell NZTA you're the new owner immediately after you buy. Not doing it can mean a fine.
  • Check the rego is current. If it's due soon, renew it.
  • Sort out insurance before you drive away.

Where to do it

Online at transact.nzta.govt.nz, which is free, or in person with ID at an NZTA agent such as AA, VTNZ or VINZ. Companies and people without an NZ driver licence need to use an agent.

Common questions

Is there still a 7-day limit?

No. Older guidance mentioned 7 days, but NZTA now says to do it immediately after the sale.

Do I need to do anything if I sell to a dealer?

Yes, you still need to tell NZTA you've sold it. Selling to us? Start here.
